Where to Stay in Milan: The Best Areas, Explained Briefly

Milan is not big, but the area you stay in changes your trip a lot: travel times, evening atmosphere, prices. Here are the main areas with pros and cons, so you can choose in a few minutes.

Bosco Verticale a Porta Nuova, Milano

For a first trip: near an M1 or M2 stop
If you arrive by train: Centrale / Corso Buenos Aires area
Tip: better 5 minutes from the metro than 20 minutes on foot from the centre

How to choose the area

The most useful rule: stay near a metro stop, ideally on the red M1 or green M2. By metro you reach the Duomo, Brera, Navigli and the Fiera in a few minutes, so you do not necessarily need to stay in the historic centre, where prices are higher.

The areas compared

AreaIdeal forGood to know
Duomo and historic centreA short first tripHigh prices, quieter in the evening
BreraAtmosphere and strollsElegant but expensive
NavigliNightlifeNoisy at weekends, far from Centrale
Porta Nuova / IsolaModern architecture, workBusiness district, less historic
Centrale StationTrains and airportsChoose the side streets, not the square
Corso Buenos Aires / Porta VeneziaBalance of price and convenienceBusy on Saturdays, excellent connections

Duomo, Brera and Navigli

These are the most photographed areas: perfect for a romantic weekend, but pricier and, in the case of Navigli, noisy in the evening. If you want to enjoy them without staying there, the metro gets you there in 10–20 minutes. Find out more in Brera and Navigli.

Centrale and Corso Buenos Aires: the practical choice

If you arrive by train, have flights from Malpensa or Bergamo, or plan to move around a lot, the area between Centrale Station and Corso Buenos Aires is the most practical: two metro lines, the station within walking distance and plenty of restaurants. We cover it in detail in where to stay near Milano Centrale.

For trade fairs and events

For EICMA, Salone del Mobile and the other Rho trade fairs you do not need to stay on the outskirts: the M1 takes you to Rho Fieramilano with no changes. Read our guide to getting to Fiera Milano Rho and book early, because prices rise during fair weeks.
