What to see
Milan’s most romantic neighbourhood: cobbled streets, galleries, the Pinacoteca with Raphael and Caravaggio, and a hidden botanical garden.
From the suite: M2 green line from Loreto to Lanza or Moscova, about 15 minutes
Time needed: half a day
Closed: the Pinacoteca on Mondays
One of Italy’s great art collections: Raphael’s Marriage of the Virgin, Mantegna’s Lamentation over the Dead Christ, Caravaggio’s Supper at Emmaus and Hayez’s famous The Kiss. Allow at least two hours. On the first Sunday of the month, entry is free with a reservation.
Tucked away behind the Palazzo di Brera is the Orto Botanico, a small 18th-century garden with centuries-old trees and neatly kept flowerbeds. Entry is free, and it’s perfect for a quiet break in the heart of the city.
Via Brera, Via Fiori Chiari and Via Madonnina are the heart of the neighbourhood: workshops, galleries, small design shops and outdoor tables. During Design Week, Brera becomes one of the most visited Fuorisalone districts.
Brera is full of cafés and trattorias: lovely for lunch or an aperitivo before dinner. Prices are higher than average, but the atmosphere makes up for it. From here, the Castello Sforzesco is a ten-minute walk.
