Day trips
Palaces and gardens on the water, an hour away by train: Stresa, Isola Bella with Palazzo Borromeo, Isola dei Pescatori and Isola Madre.
Train: from Milano Centrale to Stresa, about 1 hour
When: spring to autumn, when the palaces and gardens are open
Time needed: a full day
From the suite, walk to Milano Centrale station and take a train to Stresa: the journey takes about an hour. From Stresa station it’s around a ten-minute walk down to the lakefront.
Boats leave from the Stresa landing stage; a day ticket covering several islands is the best value. The palaces and gardens usually open from late March to October: check opening times before you set off.
From Stresa the cable car climbs towards Mottarone, with views over the lakes (check that it’s running). Alternatively, stroll along the lakefront to the Art Nouveau villas.
Set off early to enjoy the islands with fewer people around. On sunny days the boats fill up: keep an eye on the times of the last boat back and of the train to Milan.
Stay just steps away
