Lake Garda from Milan: Sirmione and Desenzano in a day

The castle on the water, the Grotte di Catullo and the thermal waters: Sirmione is the easiest day trip on Lake Garda, with the train to Desenzano.

Castello Scaligero di Sirmione, Lago di Garda

Train: from Milano Centrale to Desenzano del Garda, about 1 hour by high-speed train
Then: bus or boat to Sirmione, about 20–30 minutes
When: from spring to autumn

Getting there

From Centrale, take a train to Desenzano del Garda: it takes about an hour by high-speed train, a little longer on regional services. From Desenzano, buses and boats run to Sirmione; the boat is slower, but the views of the lake make it worth it.

Sirmione

  • The Scaliger Castle, surrounded by water, at the entrance to the old town.
  • The Grotte di Catullo, a large Roman villa at the tip of the peninsula.
  • The beach of flat rocks and crystal-clear water below the Grotte.

Spas and relaxation

Sirmione is famous for its thermal waters: there are spas where you can spend a few hours. Book ahead at weekends.

Tips

In summer the old town gets very crowded: arrive early and have lunch away from the main street. Check the times of the last boat and the last train to Milan. Desenzano is worth a stroll around the harbour before you head back.
