What to see
When the heat arrives, Milan moves outdoors: swimming pools, the Idroscalo, concerts in stadiums and courtyards, rooftops and day trips to the lakes.
To cool off: Idroscalo and public swimming pools
Evenings: concerts, courtyards and rooftops
In the suites: air conditioning in every room
Known as “the Milanese seaside”, it’s a large lake near Linate with beaches, pools, cycle paths and water sports. In summer it also hosts events and concerts.
Milan has several open-air public pools, open from June to early September. Opening hours and prices are on the Milanosport website: go on a weekday to avoid the crowds.
From June to July, San Siro and the venues around it host the big concerts (read our guide to San Siro). In the courtyards of the Castello and in many parks there are outdoor music, theatre and cinema festivals.
Hotel terraces and the rooftop bars of Porta Nuova and the centre are perfect at sunset. On the Navigli and at the Arco della Pace, outdoor terraces stay busy until late.
Around Ferragosto (15 August) many Milanese leave town and some restaurants and shops close for the holidays: the city is quieter and the museums stay open. For a cooler day out, Lake Como and Lake Maggiore are about an hour away by train.
