Day trips

Rome as a day trip from Milan: is it doable? Itinerary and tips

With high-speed trains, Rome is about three hours away: a packed day, but doable if you book your trains early and choose a walking itinerary.

Il Colosseo a Roma

Train: high-speed from Milano Centrale to Roma Termini, about 3 hours
Timing: leave at dawn, return in the evening
Book ahead: trains and the Colosseum

Is it doable?

Yes, but it’s a long day. Catch a very early high-speed train from Centrale, a 10-minute walk from the suite, and come back on one of the last trains in the evening. Booking in advance gets you much lower fares.

Morning: ancient Rome

From Termini, take the metro to the Colosseum. With a pre-booked ticket you can visit the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill: allow at least two to three hours.

Afternoon: the centre on foot

From Piazza Venezia, walk to the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain, ending at Piazza di Spagna. It’s a route of a few kilometres past the most famous monuments.

Tips

  • Comfortable shoes and water: public drinking fountains (“nasoni”) are everywhere.
  • Choose either museums or a walking tour, not both.
  • The Vatican Museums need a day of their own.
  • Leave some leeway for your return train.
