Getting there

Regional trains to Pavia run frequently from Milano Centrale and Rogoredo: you’ll be there in about half an hour. The centre is within walking distance of the station.

Pavia

  • The Ponte Coperto (covered bridge) over the Ticino, the symbol of the city, and Borgo Ticino with its colourful houses.
  • The University, one of the oldest in Europe, with courtyards open to visitors.
  • The Romanesque basilica of San Michele Maggiore and San Pietro in Ciel d’Oro, home to the tomb of St Augustine.
  • The Castello Visconteo, which houses the Civic Museums.

The Certosa di Pavia

A few kilometres from the city, the Certosa is one of Italy’s most spectacular monasteries, with its marble façade and great cloister. Get there by train to Certosa di Pavia station followed by a walk of about 20 minutes, or by bus. Always check opening days and times.

Local flavours

Try the risotto alla certosina and torta paradiso, a typical Pavia cake.
