Castello Sforzesco and Parco Sempione: what to see

Free-to-enter courtyards, museums with Michelangelo’s Rondanini Pietà and, behind them, the big park stretching to the Arco della Pace. Direct M1 from the suite.

Torre del Filarete, Castello Sforzesco

From the suite: M1 red line from Lima to Cairoli, about 15 minutes
Time needed: half a day
Free: the courtyards always; the museums on the first Sunday of the month

The Castello

You can walk freely through the fortress of the Sforza and Visconti families: the courtyards and the Filarete Tower are open to all. Inside are the Castello Museums: ancient art, the Sala delle Asse decorated by Leonardo, musical instruments and the museum of the Rondanini Pietà, Michelangelo’s last work.

Parco Sempione

Behind the Castello lies the largest park in the city centre: lawns, a small lake, centuries-old trees and running paths. At the far end is the Arco della Pace, surrounded by aperitivo bars.

Triennale and Torre Branca

Inside the park you’ll find the Triennale, the design museum with exhibitions and a lovely garden, and Torre Branca, with a panoramic lift over the city (opening hours vary by season).

Tips

  • On the first Sunday of the month, the Castello’s civic museums are free.
  • In December, the Oh Bej! Oh Bej! fair is held around the Castello.
  • In summer, the courtyards host outdoor concerts and shows.
