What to see
The Gothic cathedral and its terraces among the spires, with views over the city and, on clear days, all the way to the Alps. From the suite you’ll be in the square in 10 minutes.
From the suite: M1 red line from Lima to Duomo, about 10 minutes
Time needed: 2 hours for the cathedral and terraces
Tip: visit the terraces early in the morning or at sunset
The Duomo is Milan’s signature church: six centuries in the making, more than three thousand statues and monumental stained-glass windows. You need a ticket to go in, which you can buy on the official Veneranda Fabbrica website or at the ticket office. Shoulders and knees must be covered.
Climbing up to the terraces is the highlight: you walk among flying buttresses and spires up to the golden Madonnina statue. You can go up on foot or by lift (separate ticket). On clear days you can see the Alps. In rain or strong wind, access may be restricted.
Buy online in advance and choose your time slot: you’ll skip most of the queue. Combined tickets include the cathedral, terraces, Duomo Museum and archaeological area. Early morning is the quietest time.
Right next door is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, which leads to Piazza della Scala; on the other side is the Palazzo Reale with its exhibitions. For a view of the Duomo from above, try the panoramic terraces of the department stores on the square.
