Visitatori in una pinacoteca

When: the first Sunday of the month and on some national holidays
Booking: required for Brera and the Last Supper
Near the suite: Casa Museo Boschi Di Stefano, always free

The first Sunday of the month

On the first Sunday of every month the civic museums are free: Castello Sforzesco, Museo del Novecento, the Modern Art Gallery (GAM), the Archaeological Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Civic Aquarium. On the same day, state museums such as the Pinacoteca di Brera and the Last Supper are also free, but only with a reservation. Expect bigger crowds than usual: get there at opening time.

National free days

State museums also offer free entry on certain national holidays, such as 25 April, 2 June and 4 November. Always check the museum’s website, as initiatives can change.

Always free

  • Casa Museo Boschi Di Stefano: a 1930s apartment filled with 20th-century Italian art, a few minutes’ walk from the suite.
  • Pirelli HangarBicocca: large-scale contemporary art installations in a former industrial shed.
  • The Cimitero Monumentale: an open-air museum of sculpture and architecture.
  • The Brera Botanical Garden and the church of San Bernardino alle Ossa.

Tip

If you’re staying several days, pair a first Sunday with the free museums and save the other days for the sights that need booking: the Duomo, the Last Supper and La Scala.
